Kai Degner, current executive director of the Arts Council of the Valley, has announced he will be stepping away from his role at the organization no later than January 1, 2009. Both Degner and Arts Council are committed to a smooth transition, and Degner will stay on board until the new director is in place.
"We are very appreciative of the work Kai has accomplished for the Arts Council of the Valley, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors," says Board President Ann Menefee. "We will work together to make the transition process for a new director as seamless as possible."
"I made this decision while being fully supportive of - and feeling supported by - the Arts Council's Board of Directors, staff, and the arts community," says Degner. "I feel the organization is more relevant and accessible than ever, and am excited about the organization's future. While I have not yet committed to anything specific, I feel the pull of opportunities to serve this community in a new role, pursue other long-standing interests, and grow as an individual."
The Arts Council has begun a hiring process to fill the position.

Executive Director, Arts Council: The Arts Council of the Valley, based in Harrisonburg, VA, seeks a full-time Executive Director. The Council is a 501(c)3 organization established in 2001 to promote arts and culture in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, home to 115,000 residents and the locations for two universities and one private college.
The director is responsible for building community and arts alliances, administering a re-granting program, developing the council's donor base, overseeing publicity and planning for special events, fostering arts education initiatives, and managing the operation of the council and its facilities. The director will also supervise a part-time manager of a small theater run by the arts council; a part-time assistant director of the arts council; and a part-time administrative assistant. The executive director reports to the arts council's board of directors.
The successful candidate must possess strong office administration, financial management and reporting skills. Experience in public relations, basic website management and technology, an a proven track record of successful grant writing and fundraising is expected.
A master's degree in the arts and/or business management or equilvalent experience is desired.
